Marina Mausi
Germany
Luminous figurative portraits of archetypal women, shaped by neo-pop aesthetics and a former life in aerospace engineering.
Biography
Marina Mausi is a self-taught artist based in Hamburg, Germany. The cosmos was her profession. Now it’s her aesthetic. After a lifetime working as an aerospace engineer, she began her artistic career in 2024, working primarily with oil on canvas. She develops a contemporary figurative practice influenced by neo-pop aesthetics, Y2K visual culture, symbolic portraiture, and speculative female imagery. Her paintings focus on female figures, combining stylised portraiture, luminous colour, clean backgrounds, expressive costume details, and elements of transformation. Through this visual language, Mausi creates images that move between the personal and the archetypal, the intimate and the otherworldly. She is currently working on a collection entitled “History. Epochs. Archetypes of the Future.” She lives and works in Germany.
Artistic Practice
In my work, I explore female identity as a fluid space between the physical and the immaterial, the human and the otherworldly, the vulnerable and the powerful. My portraits exist on the threshold between body, light, memory, and transformation. The women I paint differ in appearance: shaved heads, brightly coloured hair, cybernetic features, punk hairstyles, tattoos, neon skin. For me, these are not decorative — they are metaphors for inner states, resistance against uniformity, and signs that identity is never fixed. It is constantly constructed, transformed, and revealed through new manifestations. I do not seek idealisation or a universal standard of beauty. My heroines are not specific individuals — they are archetypal figures: the rebel, the warrior, the sage, the explorer, the seer. Through them, I speak about strength, fragility, strangeness, sensuality, silence, resistance, and self-creation. These images invite the viewer to reconsider what it means for a woman to be visible, vulnerable, different, and powerful at the same time — to preserve courage and inner integrity without denying her own complexity. I also refer to classical ceremonial portraiture: frontality, solemn posture, expressive costume, symbolic details, and inner dignity. Through this dialogue between historical tradition and contemporary psychological experience, I create a space where the earthly and the luminous, the real and the imagined, the personal and the archetypal can coexist.
